Vintage human capital and learning curves
نویسنده
چکیده
I study a vintage-human-capital model in which long-lived workers accumulate human capital following an exogenous learning curve. Different skill levels inside a vintage are complementary in production; this makes the ex ante homogeneous workers enter different vintages. The continuous-time framework allows me to study the timing decision for the technology phase-out differentially and to derive sharp characterization for wages and the distribution of workers in the dying technology. I show how to posit and solve a planner0s problem and construct equilibrium in this way. Consistent with empirical evidence, I show that the experience premium is always positive but diminishes as a technology ages. The connection between workers0 learning curves and the technology0s progress curve is characterized. & 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Vintage Capital Growth Theory: Three Breakthroughs
Vintage capital growth models have been at the heart of growth theory in the 60s. This research line collapsed in the late 60s with the so-called embodiment controversy and the technical sophisitication of the vintage models. This paper analyzes the astonishing revival of this literature in the 90s. In particular, it outlines three methodological breakthroughs explaining this resurgence: a grow...
متن کاملExperience vs. obsolescence: A vintage-human-capital model
I introduce endogenous human-capital accumulation into an infinitehorizon version of Chari & Hopenhayn’s (1991) vintage-human-capital model. Different skill levels inside a vintage are complementary in production. I establish equivalence between competitive equilibrium and a planner’s problem, which ensures uniqueness of equilibrium. Returns to skill and tenure premia are highest in young vinta...
متن کاملStatutory Retirement Age and
As societies age, pension reforms become a central issue. One proposition is to extend worklife. However, due to the endogenous depreciation of human capital in many countries the effective retirement age is even below the present statutory retirement age. We analyze this effect in a putty-putty human capital vintage model where the economic retirement age is endogenous. While a higher rate of ...

Most growth models assume capital is homogeneous with regard to technology. This contradicts intuition and empirical evidence that the majority of technology is embodied in the capital stock. Berger (2001) showed that neoclassical vintage capital (embodied technology) and non-vintage capital (disembodied technology) models have different convergence rates, although identical steady state growth...

We consider a variety of vintage capital models of a firm’s choice of technology under uncertainty in the presence of adjustment costs and technology-specific learning. Similar models have been studied in a deterministic setting. Part of our objective is to examine the robustness of the implications of the certainty models to uncertainty. We find that the answer crucially depends on the specifi...
